Today's Reading: Mark Chapters 1-3


We are a quarter of the way through the gospels. I’m excited to begin the book of Mark. Truth be told, I don’t always complete the readings on time but am determined to get through this Advent Reading Season.

This morning I finished up Saturday’s reading and today I am planning to go through the comments that were left this past week to see what everyone had to say as well as what I may have missed.

I have read through the New Testament before but this time around I am picking up things I didn’t notice. It’s amazing what you can see with your eyes when you go back and read. I’ve been using a highlighter to track some things I’ve honed in on so be sure and check the comments from last week’s post.

By His Wounds

Satan Continues To Be Satan

“For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.” - 2 Corinthians 11:13–15

Satan doesn't show up in your living room and announce “Good evening, I am Satan and I have a horrible plan for your life!” No one would buy that. Instead he deceives, he disguises himself as something appealing, something appropriate, as an angel of light.

His servants do the same, even disguising themselves as servants of righteousness. He had seduced kings, prophets, and Jewish exorcists. He has sought the downfall of righteous men such as Job by turning nature and the wisdom of men against him. Satan roams the earth, seeking to devour all he can.

His wrath builds as his time grows shorter because he is aware that soon the King of kings will come and make all His enemies His footstool! Although that time is probably closer than we realize it is not quite here yet.

Satan continues to be Satan – the adversary of every child of God. Therefore you must learn all you can from the Word of God about him.

Grace:

Mark 16:16 and Baptism


Christ didn’t say anything about those who believe and are not baptized.

What about the thief on the cross? Christ said to the thief, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” The thief could not be baptized before he died on the cross, but he was certainly saved that day.

Our justification from sins takes place at the point of saving faith, not at the point of water baptism, which usually occurs later.

Baptism is not necessary for salvation. But it is necessary if we are to be obedient to Christ, for he commanded baptism for all who believe in him.

You are a Masterpiece

This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome  for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

When You Believed

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Remember those Old Testament Believers? They are saved by faith, too!

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. 

Hebrews 11:13 

Abraham looked forward to the day of the promised Messiah. 

(John 8:56) 

Here are some Old Testament believers who had faith in Christ: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Sarah. 

Your faith in Christ is what saves you. 

That's why they call it saving faith or faith that saves!

Not Condemned

John 3: 18 says, "He who believes in him is not condemned;"

Do you believe in him?

The bible says if you believe in him you're not condemned.

How cool is that?

Did you get that?

Are you getting it?

All Who Call On Him

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Every Person. Everybody. Everyone.

They shall never perish

You. Will. Be. Saved.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Believe in the Lord Jesus and be Saved

Sunday Notes: The Grace of God

Today's Message at Church
John 6:36-47

These are the notes I jotted down at church while I was listening to the sermon.  It really impacted me in a big way.  I am still thinking about everything.  Did you have a chance to listen to the sermon from the church web site?  I sure hope so! :)

NOTES

The Grace of God and Our Salvation. 

I am what I am by the sheer Grace of God. 

God's Grace never changes. 

Read John Chapter 6

(I still need to read the whole chapter) 

Remember when Jesus fed 5,000? Well, that meal was about God's grace. 

God's Grace is necessary.

vs 37 "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away."

He said whoever comes to Him He will never drive away.  Did you get that?

vs 44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day."

Jesus said He will raise him up.  Did you get that? 

I underlined this next verse in my bible... 

vs 47 "I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life."

Jesus said he who believes has everlasting life. Did you get that? 

It's because of God's Grace that we have Salvation.  It's not because of us, it's because of HIM. 

My Salvation is because of God's Grace!  God Himself draws us to Him! 

Romans 3: 10-12 says, "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." 

It's because of God's Grace that we have everlasting life.  He draws us to Him,  not the other way around.  God doesn't change! 

Ephesians 2: 1-2 says, "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient." 

Keep reading Ephesians Chapter 2.  Read it very slowly. Soak up every single word because there is nothing we can do to make God love us more or less.  His love for us never ends.  His love for us is on-going, everlasting, from the beginning to the end. 

No matter how hard things get always remember it's temporary. 

God never drives us away!!!

John 6:37 says, "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away."

John 6: 38-40 says, "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 

John 10: 27-29 says, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand."

He has taken all of us in His hand and He'll never ever let you go. 

He who Believes has Everlasting Life

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.

Today's Message at Church

I’m still thinking about today’s message at church. It was about “The Grace of God” and it was on John 6:35-47. It’s listed at the top of the page and it’s part of a new sermon series that started today called “CRUX – the book of John” – I hope you will give it a listen because it has changed how I see God and how I think He sees me. I hope the message moves you as much as it moved me. Pretty cool stuff.

Accept God's Gift: Everlasting Life


Romans 10:9—That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

John 3:16—“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The Good News of the gospel is that Jesus has already done everything necessary for our salvation. We can’t earn it even if we try. We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ.

Salvation: The Free Gift of God



These are the verses that come to mind when I think of Salvation. There is nothing you can do to earn it, or lose it. 

Yet to all who received him, to those who BELIEVED in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—John 1:12

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever BELIEVES in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever BELIEVES in him is not condemned, but whoever does not BELIEVE stands condemned already because he has not BELIEVED in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:16-18

Whoever BELIEVES in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” John 3:36

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who BELIEVES in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and BELIEVES in me will never die. Do you BELIEVE this?” John 11:25

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Acts 16:29-31

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by FAITH from the first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by FAITH.” Romans 1:16-17

But now a righteousness from God, apart from the law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through FAITH in Jesus Christ to all who BELIEVE. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are JUSTIFIED FREELY by his GRACE through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through FAITH in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have FAITH in Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of FAITH. For we maintain that a man is justified by FAITH apart from observing the law. Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by FAITH and the uncircumcised through that same FAITH. Do we, then, nullify the law by this FAITH? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law. Romans 3:21-31

Therefore, since we have been justified through FAITH, we have PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by FAITH into this GRACE in which we now stand. Romans 5:1

Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who BELIEVES. Romans 10:4

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of FAITH we are proclaiming: That if you CONFESS with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and BELIEVE in your heart that God raised him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED. For it is with your heart that you BELIEVE and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you CONFESS and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who TRUSTS in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses ALL WHO CALL ON HIM, for, “EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.Romans 10:8-13

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by FAITH in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the GRACE of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” Galatians 2:20-21

In him we have redemption through his BLOOD, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s GRACE that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1:7-8

But because of his great LOVE for us, God, who is rich in MERCY, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by GRACE you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his GRACE, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by GRACE you have been saved, through FAITH—and this not from yourselves, IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:4-10

So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and GRACE. This GRACE was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:8-10

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his MERCY. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us GENEROUSLY through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his GRACE, we might become heirs having the HOPE of eternal life. Titus 3:5-7

If there are any Salvation verses I have missed feel free to let me know what they are. Remember, there is nothing we can do to earn it or lose it.

Why would anyone reject a loving relationship with no deal breakers?

On the way to swim lessons last week I heard this on K Love radio:

That’s hard to wrap your brain around, because humans have deal breakers. In our relationships there are things that happen, that end them.

But, that’s not the way God sees his relationship with you. There are no deal breakers.

That is the radical thing about Jesus. The bible calls him our Redeemer. A redeemer is one who compensates for all our faults, for our poor past performances, and bad behaviors.

It’s hard to understand why anyone would reject a loving relationship with no deal breakers.

There’s nothing you can do to earn it, or lose it.

The truth of this really spoke to me as I was driving that morning.

Please don’t allow the naysayers to keep you from knowing Christ. He loves us and He desires to have a relationship with us. God’s plan of Salvation is His gift to us.

The Bible is Clear about No Contact

What Does the Bible Say about Legalism?


The word “legalism” does not occur in the Bible. It is a term Christians use to describe a doctrinal position emphasizing a system of rules and regulations for achieving both salvation and spiritual growth. Legalists believe in and demand a strict literal adherence to rules and regulations. Doctrinally, it is a position essentially opposed to grace. Those who hold a legalistic position often fail to see the real purpose for law, especially the purpose of the Old Testament law of Moses, which is to be our “schoolmaster” or “tutor” to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24).

Even true believers can be legalistic. We are instructed, rather, to be gracious to one another: “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters” (Romans 14:1). Sadly, there are those who feel so strongly about non-essential doctrines that they will run others out of their fellowship, not even allowing the expression of another viewpoint. That, too, is legalism. Many legalistic believers today make the error of demanding unqualified adherence to their own biblical interpretations and even to their own traditions. For example, there are those who feel that to be spiritual one must simply avoid tobacco, alcoholic beverages, dancing, movies, etc. The truth is that avoiding these things is no guarantee of spirituality.

The Trap of Legalism


To avoid falling into the trap of legalism, we can start by holding fast to the words of the apostle John, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17) and remembering to be gracious, especially to our brothers and sisters in Christ. “Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand” (Romans 14:4). “You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat” (Romans 14:10).

A word of caution is necessary here. While we need to be gracious to one another and tolerant of disagreement over disputable matters, we cannot accept heresy. We are exhorted to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints (Jude 3). If we remember these guidelines and apply them in love and mercy, we will be safe from both legalism and heresy. “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).

The Apostle Paul Warns of Legalism


Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. Colossians 2:20-23

Legalists may appear to be righteous and spiritual, but legalism ultimately fails to accomplish God’s purposes because it is an outward performance instead of an inward change.

True and False Churches Today


When there is an assembly of people who take the name Christian but consistently teach that people cannot believe their Bibles—indeed, a church whose pastor and congregation seldom read their Bibles or pray in any meaningful way, and do not believe or perhaps even understand the gospel of salvation by faith in Christ alone, then how can we say that this is a true church?
